Durable solutions through policy & advocacy

Leadership and Advocacy

In her tenure as CEO of ACS CAN (the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, a 501c4 that is the advocacy affiliate of ACS), Dr. Knudsen and her team aligned both federal and state level priorities to increase access to cancer prevention, detection, and cure. This is a key component of the goal to ensure that all people have the opportunity to prevent, identify, and survive cancer.

Both in her role as CEO of ACS/ACS CAN and in her prior leadership of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, Dr. Knudsen’s priorities and those of ACS CAN centered on striving toward cancer care equity, working tirelessly to ensure that advancements in cancer care and research benefit all populations, particularly those historically underserved. Federal wins in 2023 included eliminating out of pocket cost for colonoscopy following positive at home testing for colorectal cancer risk, and in 2024 the adoption of patient navigators as a reimbursable component of cancer care. Succesful state level initiatives focused on increasing access to early detection and precision medicine.

Her leadership extends beyond her organizational roles; Dr. Knudsen actively participates in national and international forums, shaping policies and strategies that aim to eliminate cancer disparities. She is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and healthcare leaders, promoting diversity, and empowering women in science and medicine. Under Dr. Knudsen and her exceptional leadership team, the American Cancer Society achieved recognition from Forbes as one of “America’s Best Employers for Diversity”.
